The existing kitchen, laundry, and mudroom were a maze of outdated cabinetry unused chimneys, under-utilized space, one too many powder rooms, and way too many doors. After a decade of slowly renovating the rest of their house, Hopie Avery, the editor of The Scout Guide, Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill edition, avid cooker, and lover of beautiful bold interior spaces had had enough. It was time to get the kitchen of her dreams and a mudroom and laundry space that worked for their family.

The new layout removed an existing fireplace and all the dividing walls to create one large open kitchen. The old entryway, pantry, and second powder room were enlarged and combined to create a new mudroom and laundry area just off the side entry. The old laundry space and a small, rarely-used breakfast room became part of the kitchen, allowing for direct access to the backyard, and views out the front windows. The result is a light-filled kitchen with enough room to cook and entertain. Painted cork flooring, gold hardware, and a green island bring pops of color to the space, and what was once a dreary and dark kitchen is now the gorgeous heart of the home.
